Choose app to display different media. Stream from a shortcut.

If I try to play an .mp3 or .wav audio file from the file browser, I am presented with a choice of apps to play them. Good.

If I try to open ANY other format (audio, video or images), the WiFi app attempts to use its own built-in player and fails. Not good. This means I must then download the entire file to my phone before I can play it.

Also, the app is smart enough to recognize Windows Shortcuts and download the file they refer to. But not smart enough to stream the files they refer to? That should be changed as well.

Re: Choose app to display different media. Stream from a shortcut.

Hello Mugsy,

If I try to open ANY other format (audio, video or images), the WiFi app attempts to use its own built-in player and fails. Not good. This means I must then download the entire file to my phone before I can play it.

Not true, it does show the list of applications that supports those streams. If none appears and built-in player opens up then there were no other choices android could find.

Also make sure, the file extension is in lower case. This seems bug and should be fixed in next release.

Also, the app is smart enough to recognize Windows Shortcuts and download the file they refer to. But not smart enough to stream the files they refer to? That should be changed as well.

If thats the case, it will be fixed too.

Thank you.

Re: Choose app to display different media. Stream from a shortcut.

Thanks for the reply.

I have various apps on my phone to view to view multiple audio/video/image formats, yet only in a few instances am I presented with a choice of app to use.

For example, if I try to open a .jpg or .psd file, I am offered a choice of three different apps, but if I try to open a .png, I am not. Instead, the image is opened using some unrecognized app that does not allow me to swipe to the next image.

Another example, I have an app on my phone to view/stream .wtv video recordings (which can easily be 4GB or more). But when I try to open them from from the WiFi app, it immediately starts downloading it to my phone, and upon completion, gives me a "Parse error" when it tries to open it (but if I open it myself later, it plays fine.)

I haven't tested most file types yet to see which open/play and which only download.

Let me know if you need more info.

If no application choice appears when opening a png file, It could be 2 reasons. Either an application is selected default for png or there is no application installed that can support the png mime type.

The Explorer doesn't recognize .wtv as video file, thats why it will be downloaded. If you need to stream a video, .mp4 is best for it. However,  there will be an option to add new video streaming files in next release.

Re: Choose app to display different media. Stream from a shortcut.

Thx for the reply.

I have no default app for png files. When opened using the phone's file manger, I'm presented with three choices. But when opened using the WiFi app, I am not offered a choice. It simply opens the file without prompting me for an app.

I tested a few file formats as a test and here is what I found (NONE of these formats have a default app assigned to them):

File formats where I DO get a choice before or after downloading:

mp4
mkv
flv
wmv
mp3
wav
bmp
gif
htm/html
zip
psd
wmv
wma
pdf
ts

No choice (unless downloaded first then opened from Phone's own File Manager):

avi
mpg
wtv
m2ts
txt
doc
png

ALL of these files can be opened using installed apps on my phone. None of them have a default app assigned to them.

I hope this helps.

PS: If it matters, this is Android 6.0
